No MC Next org needed No data graph to build first Runs entirely in your browser
The Handlebars Lab: the data graph explorer on the left, a Handlebars template in the email editor, and the rendered email for Marcus on the right.

Built by AMPscript Academy, alongside Handlebars - The MC Next Email Developer's Handbook.

The real blocker

Getting into MC Next is one problem. Having something to practise against is the bigger one.

Even with an org, you can't write a single merge field until there's a data graph behind it. That means ingesting data, mapping data model objects, defining relationships and assembling the graph. It's days of setup before your first "Hi Marcus". So most SFMC pros read about Handlebars and never actually write any.

“I don't have MC Next access.”

Your company hasn't moved yet, or the org belongs to a client you can't experiment in.

“There's no data to practise on.”

An empty org is no help. Handlebars only means something once there's a data graph full of customers.

“The data graph confuses me.”

You know data extensions inside out. A unified individual with contact points and related objects is a new shape.

“Will my AMPscript still count?”

It does. The logic you already write carries straight over. The syntax is the easy part to learn.

Inside the Lab

Everything you need to get your reps in.

01

Ready-made data graphs, read like Setup

A bookstore, a retailer, a travel brand and a deliberately messy real-world graph, all built on the unified individual, the same shape MC Next uses. The explorer mirrors the Data Cloud Setup screen, so you can see every object, how it relates, and every field's API name before you write a line.

The data graph explorer listing the Unified Individual, contact points, Booking and Flight objects with field counts, beside a paragraph block and its rendered output.
02

Add merge fields the way MC Next does

Most personalisation is a merge field and nothing more. The Lab gives you the same configure-merge-field step you'll see in MC Next, attribute, API name and default text included, then shows you the Handlebars it writes underneath. You learn to read what the platform writes before you write it yourself.

The Configure Merge Field Details dialog showing the First Name attribute, a First_Name API name and default text of there.
03

Write Handlebars and watch it render

Paths, get, fallback, conditions, loops and formatting helpers, with syntax colouring that matches the MC Next editor. Switch between five customers per graph, including the ones with blank names and cancelled bookings, and watch the same template handle every one of them.

An HTML block containing a fallback, propercase and trim Handlebars expression, rendered as Hi Marcus in the output pane.

Questions

Before you start

How do I get access to The Handlebars Lab?
Join the free AMPscript Academy community on Skool and your access code is waiting for you inside. Enter it once and your browser remembers it.
Do I need a Marketing Cloud Next org to use it?
No. The Lab runs in your browser with its own ready-made data graphs and customer records, so you can practise Handlebars without an MC Next org and without building a data graph first.
Is it free?
Yes. Like The AMPscript Lab, it is free for members of the free AMPscript Academy community. No card and no trial period.
Is the Lab exactly the same as Marketing Cloud Next?
It is built to behave like it, using the same Handlebars syntax and MC Next style helpers like get and fallback, but it is a teaching environment. Your MC Next org is always the final source of truth, so once you have access, test there before anything goes live.
Do I need to know AMPscript first?
No, but it helps. If you know AMPscript, most of the thinking carries over and you are mainly learning new syntax and how the data graph is shaped. If you are new to both, start with the merge fields, because most personalisation is only that.

Same game. New rules. Go and write some Handlebars.
